Sewing?......nah

Yesterday we were getting ready to take a trip down to Salt Lake for a job interview. I was trying to clean, get packed, and do a massive amount of laundry before we left. Marshall showed me that he was missing a button on his shirt and I told him I'd fix it if I had time. I'm not such a great seamstress, but I do know how to sew a button on. My mom is amazing at sewing so she did a lot for us growing up. Guess it was never really my forte. Maybe someday. My last big sewing project was in 9th grade, a polar fleece pullover I made in a sewing class. Half of it looked awful, the part I sewed. My friend Camille sewed the other half when she realized how hopeless I was. When I brought it home, my mom picked off the sleeve that I had sewn on and re-did it right. Guess it's not cool to have your sleeves two different lengths? Anyways, I got really caught up in what I was doing and a while later, Marshall came up to me. Here's how our conversation went:

Marsh: "I fixed my shirt!"

Me: "Great - you sewed it back on?"

About now, Marshall gets this mischevious grin on his face and I wasn't expecting what he was about to say or show me.

Marsh: "No, I just stapled it!"

This comment was definitely worthy of an eyebrow raise followed by much laughter on my part. Come to find out he'd also stapled the cuff at the bottom of his sleeve too. He sure seemed proud of his innovative way to hold his shirt together. Now if that isn't a man thing, I don't know what is!

That's creative. I'm impressed. You and I need to have a little heart to heart with a sewing machine next time I work with you!

Hello! This is the former Soeur Guptill back from Elder Snedaker's days in Beziers. I recently saw your name on not one but two blogs that I read (Camille's at Simplify and Amanda's at Reynolds Family) and suddenly it hit me that your Elder Snedaker's Tiffany!! I heard oodles of great stuff about you back when I served with him and I'm just so excited to see you guys have a little family now and that you are all doing fabulous! Bee-utiful family. This story about Marsh makes me laugh so hard and reminds of how funny he was on our mission too! So I hope you don't mind me checking in on you guys! Please give my hello and congrats to Elder Snedaker too :)

How funny--definately creative! Your story about your Home Ec project made me laugh because I had several students do similar things! My thoughts as the teacher was that at least they were making an effort and sewing is definately one of those things that you either are brilliant at or you have to work to develop the skill. Even as a Home Ec teacher, sewing is one of those things I have to work at--I am NOT one of those naturally talented people!

I wouldn't say I was a beautiful seamstress. I had to work at it. I wanted to dress the kids cute and I needed to learn to sew. Oh the stories I could tell of sewing projects. I have had some disasters.

Oh my gosh... that is so Devin! He can fix anything with a staple or duct tape - and don't go thinking he's ever the least bit ashamed about it either. He would also be so proud. Must be ingrained in all guy DNA.
